What is a P.Eng Competency Report in Canada?

The P.Eng Competency Report is essential to engineers who want to be licensed in Canada. Under the control of regulatory bodies such as APEGBC (now Engineers and Geoscientists BC) and other provincial bodies, this report is intended to demonstrate that applicants have the required skill, knowledge, and experience to practice as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng). The report evaluates 34 core competencies, technical expertise to communication, trio management and professional ethics.

The competency report enables the engineers to give their examples of the real-world experience of their work demonstrating how they do the given competency in real life terms. Applicants are mandated to use the process that has been stipulated by CBA framework dialectic in order to ensure their qualifications meet the standards that are presented at the national level. This report is important for the public safety, engineering practices should be carried out in the highest degree of integrity and licensing should be completed in a fair, transparent, and reliable manner throughout all of Canada.

Who Can Apply for a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) License?

International engineers or graduates of non-Canadian schools who want to practice as licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), who wish to practice in Canada, are entitled to apply for licensure through the correct provincial or territorial engineering regulatory body. Applicants must hold an engineering degree; either accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), or assessed as equivalent through an academic assessment. Those with non – equivalent degrees may have to undertake confirmatory exams or extra technical coursework as well.

Applicants must also confirm (at least) 48 months of valid engineering working experience that includes a minimum 12 months of Canadian context or the knowledge equivalent to Canadian standards. Candidates are expected also to demonstrate competency in English or French, present evidence of a good character (usually reference letters) and pass the Professional Practice Exam (PPE). Although citizenship or permanent residency is not necessary, applicants must apply through the provincial regulator where they plan to work and show evident intention to practice in that jurisdiction.
